        Sustainable Development Goals

End poverty in all its forms everywhere

Since 1990, the number of people in the world who are extremely poor has halved. In 2015, however, there were still about 737 million people living under $1.90 a day (World Bank). About three-quarters of the extreme poor live in rural areas, with most dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods and food security.

Inclusive agriculture, food production and off-farm economies can create jobs and eliminate hunger in rural areas, giving people a chance to feed their families and live a decent life.

FAO helps countries develop evidence-based policies, strategies and programmes to achieve SDG 1, promoting inclusive structural transformation, access to land and resources, income diversification, decent jobs and gender equality. The Organization works to strengthen rural institutions and access to social protection for the rural poor.
